An Actress To Remember

I woke up this morning to hear of the death of Deborah Kerr. She was the star of such films as From Here To Eternity, The King And I, and An Affair To Remember. I was saddened to hear of her death. This surprised me and I wonder why. I enjoyed the films she was in. She could always get me to 'whistle a happy tune'! In many ways her death is part of the death of an era. The actors and actresses of the 40s and 50s, and perhaps even 60s, had a different style to today's stars. (OMG I just realise how OLD that makes me sound!) Will we remember Sharon Stone, Johnny Depp and Kate Winslett in the same way?...........OK, so we may well remember Johhny Depp!

Hi Campbell,
I'm glad you posted this... Geoffrey from The Art of Distraction (there's a link over at drift) wrote a lovely piece about the time he met Deborah Kerr in Melbourne, which I'm sure you'd enjoy reading (you'll have to search his archives). As for me, I would've loved to have been her just so I could've romped around the surf with Burt Lancaster (woof!) and yes, I'll remember Johnny Depp too!

Hi Campbell,
Deborah Kerr was a marvelous actress; I best remember her in “The King and I”. “Her death is part of the death of an era”; you’re spot on with that comment. I think what the majority of actors and actresses had back in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s was a semblance of “class” or maybe just a tad of decency. You didn’t hear about Joan Fontaine, Lauren Bacall, Audrey and Katherine Hepburn or Natalie Wood flashing their privates to the press or being deemed unfit parents (although, apparently Joan Crawford should have been). When Elizabeth Taylor absconded with Debbie Reynolds’ husband, Eddie Fisher in 1959, it was quite a scandal, but it seems rather banal in comparison to what we read about celebs nowadays.

Joey Bishop, age 89, also died today. They (whoever “they” are) say deaths come in 3’s; any idea on who’ll be next?

Hmmm now I'm no expert nor psychic, but how about Jennifer Jones or Olivia de Havilland or dear ol' Mickey Rooney. There really aren't that many left...

It's good to know that Johnny Depp will be remembered!
As for the 3rd!....hhhmmmm...... I must admit I thought of Olivia de Havilland when I first heard of Deborah Kerr's death and we got on to talking about Mickey Rooney at work today. Can't say I know much about Jennifer Jones, so did a quick Google of her.I guess we will have to wait and see.

Thanks for the link to Geoffrey's story Nash. I've just read it and can imagine what an impact that would have on a fifteen year old. I went backstage at the Princess theatre to meet June Salter (an Australian actress, for our o/s readers) after seeing her in Crown Matrimonial where she played Queen Mary in the play about Edward VII's abdication. Hardly Deborah Kerr, but my teenage soul was transfixed!

Hi Nash,
“I’m no expert or psychic”…who are you kidding? You’ve been blessed with invisible antenna sprouting from your brain that keeps you alerted to information us “mere mortals” have no clue about until it hits the newspaper, TV, radio, or the internet. I’m going to go with Mickey Rooney; he’s 87 years old and doesn’t appear to be particularly healthy. This is rather ghoulish…
